Our Purpose

Uniting Filipino American creators with empowering experiences and community so they can thrive.

Our Mission

FilAm CreatorCon’s mission is to illuminate the vibrant tapestry of Filipino American pop culture and celebrate the diverse creative voices that shape it across all mediums through events and experiences (such as our annual convention). From comic book creators, poets, and tattoo artists, to filmmakers, chefs, dancers, and musicians – we provide a platform that bridges cultures and generations, connects communities, and showcases the dynamic talents of Filipino American creators and artists. Through events and experiences that fuse art, storytelling, and community engagement – we inspire, empower, and educate, fostering a space where cultural heritage and creativity unite.

Our History

FilAm CreatorCon was founded in 2019 by Aaron Nabus (host of the Hall H Show podcast), after a chance meeting at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 between comic book creator, Scott Lost, community organizer and educator, Kirin Amiling Macapugay, where we pondered, “Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a convention that showcased Filipino American creators?”

With some assistance from Matt Dunford (Chairman of San Diego Comic Fest), a connection was made with Susan Vega, a librarian at the Chula Vista Library – South, a few months after SDCC 2019.

After an initial meeting between Aaron, Scott, Susan and Vince Alvendia (illustrator and comic book artist) to see if the library could be a viable venue for our inaugural event, it was all systems go!

And…then the pandemic hit.

After a couple of years going by and continued interest from the public, we got the team back together and finally had our inaugural convention on September 14, 2024, at the National City Library (huge thanks to National City Vice Mayor Ditas Yamane and librarian, Merv Jensen for their support). With almost 600 people attending, we not only showcased seventeen exhibitors and eight incredible panels, but we also proudly inducted Whilce Portacio and Bobby Rubio into our Hall of Fame!

Our planning committee has grown! We will be working hard to bring you a vibrant convention with interesting guests and fun, educational panels to help give you a unique experience. We also aim to provide additional events throughout the year to continually engage FilAm creators and promote their unique perspectives and stories.
